Janice is a native North Carolinian and has lived in Gastonia since 1972. Janice's parents were both born and raised in Chapel Hill, which is also her birthplace. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from North Carolina Central University in the neighboring city of Durham. She and her husband Bill met while she was in nursing school and he was in medical school.

Some community involvements have been: President Gaston County Medical Alliance, President Charlotte Medical Dental Pharmaceutical Auxiliary, Board YMCA, Board Pioneer Girl Scout Council, United Way, Quality of Natural Resource Commission, Nursing Home and Domiciliary Home Council.
Janice attends Parkwood Baptist Church.
